What Makes Your Blog Great

great blog I think anyone who blogs probably has a slight blog obsession.

I know I do.

And I know my obsession often has me travelling all over the Internet to find new blogs, rediscover ones I had forgotten, and of course visit my favourites (and I have a lot of them).

Lately, though, I’ve been having an interesting inner dialogue with myself about what makes a blog great. Is a blog’s value dependent on great content? Amazing design? Beautiful pictures? Or is it the stylish ladies with great outfit posts that have people coming back for more?

I’ve been trying to come up with that perfect ingredient list to put my blog up there with all the elite blogs that I envy, but I think I’ve realized, no such ingredient list exists.

Sure, having great photography can help your blog, or posting pictures of yourself in beautiful outfits might get reader’s attention, but really, when it comes down to it, I think blogging is more about knowing what strengths your blog does have and focusing on them.

For WearItBetter, I tried outfit posts, and it worked for a while but I realized I’m not really an outfit post kind of girl. It’s just not my blog’s primary appeal. And that’s fine! (which has been difficult for me to accept). Since I began blogging, I always had it in my head that the successful blogs are the ones that have high quality photos of amazingly styled outfits. Not always true. Yes, some of those blogs are super successful, but there are also blogs that don’t feature outfit posts that have success too! With so many different niches and fits in this digital age of blogging, with work, time and dedication, there’s a spot for every blog, no matter how small. It’s all about looking at this big blogging puzzle and fitting perfectly into the picture in your own unique way.

Do any other bloggers ever feel like this? How do you deal with blog envy? And do you think there’s a place for blogs out there that don’t focus on outfit posts, or do you think outfit posts are the main appeal of a fashion blog?

I completely agree with you!! I also have a ton of blogs that I love to read that aren’t related to fashion! I think a blog is all about you and what YOU love because if you aren’t enjoying what your writing about then why do it! I think any type of blog can be successful as long as your readers can tell it’s coming from the heart! :)

I COMPLETELY agree with you! every post should be about something you love or people can probably hear in your writing that it’s not genuine.

Very interesting post! I don’t often think about blog envy, but I think that this is because my blog provides people with luxury discounts/designer sales and I haven’t come across others like that (hence why I made it haha) .. but I am SO inspired by people’s blogs on here all the same. It is lovely to see such creativity and beauty compressed on each person’s blog!

I don’t think outfit posts are everything, I keep my eye on many blogs that don’t just focus on outfits – in my opinion, each blogger should play to their strengths, whatever they may be!

I think that’s why I love blogs so much too, seeing all the beautiful things that people come up with. It’s inspiring!

Your thoughts are interesting. Well, I agree about the high quality pictures. Needn’t always be true!. Some times, those are little bit annoying(no offence) when my internet is slow and the picture is taking forever to load. So medium quality pics are what I love! Also yes, we should experiment with posts. I’m not an outfit person either. So I understand what you were saying!

I think you just have to own to blog you have and make it your own in every sense of the word. I think with blogging people who read them are mainly looking for people they can relate to or share common interest or taste with. No one else is going to be you and that’s one of the best ways of “branding” a blog. I really like your writing style and think you have a great blog!

Interesting topic! I don’t know what mostly attracts me to a blog. But I think the person behind it makes me love a blog. No matter what the content of their blog is :)

I totally know what you mean about obsessing. That is for sure true – but I guess we just need to stay passionate and true to ourselves in order to be success and I think that’s with anything you want to accomplish in life. ♥

Such a mindful post! I think really the same you do about blogging – everyone has to find it’s own place and style, if you don’t feel like making an outfit blog (what I don’t do as well as you – just not my cup of tea), there’s something you are unique at and you can show to the world!

For me, there’s a trifecta of qualities that draw me to a blog: great photography/images, a creative writing voice, and consistent posting. If a blog has one of these qualities, I like to look at it now and then; if it has two or more, it’s a repeat visit from me every day. Most fashion blogs are a blend of great photography and consistent posts, but lack a really compelling voice that draws me in.

Awesome post! I follow SO many blogs that aren’t outfit-driven. I think it’s all about finding a voice, like Brittney (above) said. So happy I found yours! :)

I really enjoyed this post and watching your thought process in your writing. Personally I am most attracted to blogs that have something interesting to say. I love great photography but am a horrible photographer myself and completely unphotogenic–so my blog never features outfit posts. I agree with another commentor wrote above–I also think consistent posting is pretty important to me in blogs I follow as well.

    Best,
